EDII-TN is a creation of the Government of TamilNadu to foster innovation and entrepreneurship among all ages of people in TamilNadu. EDII-TN was started in 2001 as a fully owned institution of TamilNadu. At present it is headed by an Additional Chief Secretary level IAS officer. It has a Governing Council comprising of senior officers of the Government to guide it. The State Government has been implementing various innovation and entrepreneurship training programmes through EDII-TN.

As a part of its regular activities EDII-TN does the following:

  • Innovation Voucher Programme - EDII funds budding entrepreneurs by funding their innovation. Enable them to convert their innovative ideas into product prototypes and then commercialise it.
  • Hackathon for higher education students of TamilNadu. Almost all the higher education students are covered through this annual hackathon contest. 25 winning teams get Rs.1 lakh each cash award. Over 4 lakh students participate in this annual contest.
  • Hackathon for school students (6-12th standard): School children are enabled to do design thinking and then innovate new products. 6 lakh school students participate in this contest every year. Top 10 teams get Rs.1 lakh cash awards and 30 runner ups get Rs.25000 each award.
  • Funding and supervising 9 technology incubators.
  • Entrepreneurship Development training to all: Over 75000 Government supported beneficiaries get EDP training every year. Apart from this, EDII-TN runs EDP training for specific skill set as well.

Students enrolled in this course will have access to these programs in various capacities.
